Sperrin College is a highly successful, all ability integrated school educating young people in a creative and inspiring environment. Founded in 2002, the College developed following parental demand for integrated education in Mid Ulster and the surrounding districts.
The College provides a unique educational experience for pupils of all faiths and abilities. Our curriculum is very much underpinned by the values of our integrated ethos. Therefore, we strive to promote equality of opportunity; a desire for learning; partnership and celebration of diversity. Alongside a rich extra-curricular programme, our learners experience a balanced curriculum which is shaped by learner choice and pathways for all. We believe that learning is accessed through teaching of the highest quality. Our approach to learning focuses on developing the necessary dispositions required in order to pursue educational excellence. The College’s Learning and Teaching policy highlights the need for a pupil-centred approach which recognises that there are many different types of intellect and ways of learning.
1. Grammar and All Ability Pathways
You may choose to put your child forward for consideration for a place in our Grammar Pathway, 35% of places are available through this mechanism. To do this you must provide supporting evidence of your child’s academic ability. Entrance to the school is obtained by application of the Admissions Criteria which are published both in this prospectus and on the Education Authority (North East) Website. It is expected that all pupils within the Grammar Pathway will progress to university or college to study at degree level. In recent years, a significant proportion of those in the middle pathway have also progressed to Sixth Form and on to university to study.
As an all ability school, we are committed to providing life opportunities for all our learners. Therefore, through the development of a bespoke curriculum, we strive to offer appropriate choices for all. Whilst the majority of our learners progress along a more academic route, we are committed to ensuring that our more vocationally talented students are given the necessary support to achieve their maximum potential
2. Curriculum and Learning
Our curriculum and learning experience engages pupils by making relevant connections to teenage life and the world of life and work. Assessment for and of learning rests at the heart of what we do and is crucial in helping us move our students forward in their learning. In evaluating the learning experience, we utilise the pupil and parent voice this ensures the curriculum is fresh and relevant to all our learners needs and the needs of the economy. Our staff continuously develop their skills in order to respond to the ever changing landscape of education. We create a stimulating learning environment where academic study and intellectual pursuits are cherished and valued. We recognise and develop the unique potential of each individual pupil ensuring that stretch and challenge is coupled with the necessary support. This in turn enables our learners to become questioning, independent, reflective young people who can appropriately use their knowledge to understand, interpret and interact with today’s society.
Integrated Education at Sperrin College offers our pupils an enriching experience by providing them with opportunities to develop not only their own cultural identity but to share and learn from others. Our pupils have trusting and respectful attitudes to their peers as they develop strong bonds of friendship with each other.
Sperrin College pupils are not only furnished with high level skills and qualifications, but also display well developed personal capabilities such as team work, creativity, and innovation which are essential for university and the world of work.
